Magnitude-6.4 earthquake rattles southern Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale struck southern Taiwan at around 8: 18 a.m. Thursday, the Seismology Center under the Central Weather Bureau reported later that day.

Except that a fire broke out in Chiayi City and a man was injured by a falling tree in Chiayi County, no other casualties or damage had been reported as of the press time.The quake, centered 17 km southeast of Jiasian in Kaohsiung County, southern Taiwan at a depth of 5 km, was felt around the island, seismologists said.

The quake had an intensity of 6 in Nansi in Tainan County and Dapu in Chiayi County, 5 in Taoyuan in Kaohsiung County, Chiayi City and Douliou in Yunlin County.
