What is the music used for the opening of the film?
It is the Prelude for the first act of the opera Tristan und Isolde by Richard Wagner performed by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. It was also used in the film's official trailer.
Why couldn't Justine's horse cross the bridge, and... [spoilers]
Why couldn't Justine's horse cross the
bridge throughout the film, and why couldn't Claire's golf cart cross
it at the end? Why couldn't Claire get any other car to start at the
end, either?
It's possible that the lack of oxygen in the
atmosphere on Melancholia's approach prevented the cars' engines from
starting, as gas engines need oxygen for combustion. Golf carts
generally use electric motors rather than gas engines, which is why it
was the only vehicle that would start.
The horse and then the
golf cart that wouldn't cross the bridge may symbolize the mental state
of the driver. Justine couldn't get her horse to cross during the times
in the film when she was acting unbalanced, though Claire's horse could
cross; later, when Melancholia's approach caused Claire to lose her
composure, her golf cart wouldn't cross.
